A Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) has convicted and sentenced suspended Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Drambi Vandi, to death over the murder of a Lagos-based lawyer, Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem.

Vandi’s capital punishment for the killing of Omobalanle will be hanging, the court ruled.

Justice Ibiroke Harrison delivered the ruling after noting that the prosecution, the Lagos state government, had proven its case against the suspect beyond all reasonable doubt.

The presiding judge, while delivering the judgment, held that it was only the convict who had the opportunity to commit the crime, even though no eyewitness saw him fire the shot.

The court said credible evidence provided by the 11 witnesses who testified for the prosecution was enough to convict the suspended police officer.

Justice Harrison, therefore, sentenced the convict to death, stating that “that was to be hung by the neck until you were dead. May God have mercy on your soul.”

It would be recalled that Omobolanle was killed on December 25, 2022, at a police checkpoint in the Ajah area of Lagos following an argument that ensued between the police and her husband.

The death of a 41-year-old pregnant lawyer caused an uproar on social media as a civil rights activist demanded justice over her gruesome murder by a trigger-happy police officer.
