Edozie Akunyili, son of the late Dora Akunyili, former Director-General of NAFDAC, has voiced deep concerns about the value of sacrifices made by his family for Nigeria, particularly in light of the country’s ongoing challenges.

Expressing his sentiments on the X social media platform, Edozie reacted to discussions centering on the pervasive presence of fake consumer goods flooding markets nationwide.

Users recalled Dora Akunyili’s impactful efforts in combating counterfeit products, even recounting an incident where her home and office were set ablaze.

In a series of tweets, Edozie reflected on the sacrifices made by his family for the nation, drawing attention to persisting issues of corruption and impunity. He questioned the worth of their sacrifices and how it had impacted their lives.

Highlighting his mother’s devotion to her role in NAFDAC, Edozie revealed that her commitment had delayed a necessary medical procedure, ultimately revealing her cancer diagnosis.

In a poignant statement on Tuesday, Edozie lamented, “Our family sacrificed immensely for Nigeria, yet we’re left questioning if it was truly worthwhile.”

Expressing frustration with the prevalent corruption and political manipulations in the country, he grieved that his mother’s life was lost amidst deceitful politics and corruption.

Dora Akunyili succumbed to uterine cancer on June 7, 2014, while undergoing treatment at a specialized cancer hospital in India. Her husband, Chike Akunyili, met a tragic end on September 28, 2021, in Umuoji, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
