A devastating incident unfolded as a family of eight, en route home for the New Year festivities, met with a fatal accident at the Amanwozuzu junction in Imo state’s Ikeduru Local Government Area.
As reported by The Punch, the incident which happened around 3 pm on Friday has caused anxiety in the area.
The family’s father, transporting his wife and children in a Sienna vehicle, collided with a stationary truck laden with rods.
Eyewitnesses and law enforcement officials engaged in the rescue effort revealed that the rods penetrated the victims’ bodies, claiming the lives of all on board instantly.
The vehicle had to be dismantled to retrieve the lifeless bodies of the family.
At present, authorities from the Ikeduru Local Government Area Division have taken charge, depositing the deceased into a morgue.
Lucky Ahiole, the Chief Superintendent of Police overseeing the Ikeduru LGA, expressed the horrifying nature of the incident.
“It is terrible. Eight died and we have taken them to a morgue. We had to break the Sienna vehicle to bring out the dead bodies. The rod pierced their eyes and bodies and even the children died.”
Meanwhile, conflicting accounts surfaced when an eyewitness suggested that the tragedy might have been prevented had the stationary truck, obstructing the road with its load of rods, not been parked there.
