In a distressing turn of events, nine individuals, including a young 13-year-old girl, have succumbed to Lassa Fever among the 39 confirmed cases recorded in Benue State.
Dr. Yanmar Ortese, the commissioner for health and human services, revealed this grim situation during a conversation with Leadership in Makurdi yesterday. The state government is now preparing for the burial of the victims.
Confirming the outbreak, Dr. Stephen Hwande, Chief Medical Director of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital Makurdi (BSUTH), explained that among the confirmed cases were individuals referred to the hospital from various medical facilities in the region.
Dr. Hwande also highlighted the hospital’s plans to upgrade its isolation center using a grant from the state government. This initiative aims to enhance the hospital’s capacity to manage not only Lassa Fever but also other infectious diseases effectively.
Urging swift action, Dr. Hwande encouraged individuals experiencing symptoms related to Lassa Fever to seek immediate medical attention at the hospital. Additionally, he emphasized the availability of preventive medication at the institution.
Professor Audu Onyemocho, the State Focal Person for Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), outlined the symptoms of Lassa Fever, cautioning against potential sources of infection like contact with infected rats or individuals. He advised measures such as covering food properly and blocking rats’ access in homes to prevent contamination.
This recent outbreak serves as a somber reminder of the importance of swift response and preventive measures in curbing the spread of such infectious diseases within communities.
