The Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Maureen Uche Umeakuewulu, has dismissed claims questioning the state of facilities at the hospital, describing them as misleading and inconsistent with ongoing improvements in the institution.
Reacting to comments reportedly made by Dr. Charles Kenechukwu, Dr. Umeakuewulu said the Anambra State Government, under Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has continued to make substantial investments aimed at transforming the teaching hospital into a world-class healthcare facility.
According to the Chief Medical Director, the state government has supported the hospital through the provision of critical infrastructure, modern medical equipment, manpower development and improved welfare packages for healthcare professionals.
She disclosed that consultants and resident doctors at COOUTH currently receive some of the most competitive remuneration packages among tertiary health institutions in the country, a move aimed at attracting and retaining skilled medical personnel.
Dr. Umeakuewulu further revealed that the state government recently approved the procurement of medical equipment valued at over ₦500 million, in addition to earlier investments exceeding ₦200 million, to strengthen specialist healthcare delivery at the hospital.
She also highlighted the hospital’s trauma centre, describing it as one of the largest and best-equipped in the South-East, with modern facilities capable of handling complex emergency and trauma cases.
The CMD noted that ongoing reforms, including the digitalisation of hospital operations, modernisation of critical care units, installation of oxygen reticulation systems and acquisition of advanced diagnostic equipment, demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery, medical education and research.
She urged members of the public to objectively assess the developments at the institution and support initiatives aimed at strengthening the healthcare system, stressing that constructive engagement is essential to sustaining progress in the sector.
