Two individuals have lost their lives, and 77 others sustained injuries following an explosion on Tuesday evening in a tragic incident that happened in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who visited the scene, confirmed the casualties and revealed that the blast occurred at Adeyi Avenue, Bodija, resonating across various parts of the city.
Governor Makinde disclosed that preliminary investigations by security agencies point to illegal miners occupying a house in Bodija, where explosive devices were stored, causing the devastating blast.
He emphasized ongoing investigations and assured that those responsible would be held accountable.
The governor directed comprehensive support for the victims, covering medical bills and providing temporary accommodation for those whose homes were affected.
Numerous houses suffered damage, even several kilometers away from the explosion’s epicenter.
“We have already deployed first responders and all relevant agencies within Oyo State to carry out comprehensive search and rescue operations.
These operations will continue throughout the night,” stated Governor Makinde.
Ambulances, earth-moving equipment, emergency lights, and security personnel were swiftly mobilized to the scene.
He urged residents to contact emergency services at 615 for assistance and requested calm to facilitate uninterrupted rescue operations.
Governor Makinde expressed gratitude to first responders, security personnel, and medical staff involved in the rescue efforts.
The governor concluded with condolences for the affected families, stating, “Please say a prayer for those who have been affected by this disaster as we continue with the rescue operations.”
