The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has declared a three-day statewide crusade to commemorate the recent Supreme Court judgment affirming his victory in the March 18, 2023 governorship election.
However, the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state deems the crusade as “an unnecessary jamboree.”
During the first Government House Prayer Service for 2024 on Monday, the governor announced the crusade, scheduled for February 8 to 10, expressing gratitude to God for his electoral triumph.
Reflecting on his political journey, Eno said, “From January 30, 2022, when God led my worthy predecessor, Udom Emmanuel, to unveil me as his preferred successor, all hell broke loose. Fast forward to today, all those cases were thrown out for lacking in merit, the most current being the Supreme Court judgment last week that affirmed the mandate our people had given me.”
Eno, a former Commissioner for Land and Water Resources, justified the celebration, stating, “To show gratitude to God and the collective joy of the people, we have declared February 8, 9 and 10 for a statewide crusade.”
In response, the Chairman of the APC Media and Publicity Committee in the state, Otuekong John, criticized the governor’s plan as a jamboree.
John noted that the governor should focus on initiatives that improve living conditions, education, infrastructure, and agriculture in the state, following the Supreme Court victory.
He said, “What Akwa Ibom expect from the governor after the Supreme Court victory is doing things that will translate to better conditions of living in the state, improve education, infrastructure, in agriculture and others.”
