The Ghana team bus was attacked by angry fans after the team’s 2-2 draw against Mozambique in the final group game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast. The attack was a result of frustration and disappointment with the team’s abysmal performance in the tournament.

The Black Stars of Ghana had given away a late lead for the second time in the group stage, drawing 2-2 with Mozambique. Mozambique scored twice in second-half stoppage time, which almost certainly sent Ghana crashing out of the 2023 AFCON at the group stage. The draw meant that Ghana failed to win a game in the tournament, having lost 1-2 to Cape Verde and drawn with Egypt in pool play.

After the match, some angry fans barricaded the team bus from leaving the Alassane Ouattara Stadium, demanding to speak to the head coach, Chris Hughton, and the players. This incident follows a previous attack on the team and the head coach in the team’s hotel after Ghana lost 2-1 to Cape Verde in their opening match of the 2023 AFCON.

The frustration among the fans stems from Ghana’s poor performance in the tournament, and the attacks on the team and its coach reflect the disappointment and anger of the supporters who had high expectations for the Black Stars in their quest for the continental title. Ghana, a four-time African champion, is seeking its first continental title in more than four decades, with its last title coming in 1982.
