Jurgen Klopp has declared that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, drawing the curtain on his illustrious nine-year tenure in English football.
In a shocking revelation on Friday morning, the German manager shared the news in an interview with the club’s website, citing ‘running out of energy’ as the reason, as reported by Daily Mail.
Klopp’s longtime assistants, Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, will also bid farewell in the summer, with Lijnders eyeing a move into management.
In a poignant statement, Klopp expressed, “I love absolutely everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team, I love the staff. I love everything. But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take.”
He continued, “It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.”
Reflecting on his time with the club, Klopp acknowledged the love and respect that had grown over the years, saying “After the years we had together and after all the time we spent together and after all the things we went through together, the respect grew for you, the love grew for you, and the least I owe you is the truth – and that is the truth.”
Klopp, who took the helm at Liverpool in 2015 succeeding Brendan Rodgers, faced the challenge of revamping a struggling team that had narrowly missed out on trophies.
His patience bore fruit in 2019 when Liverpool secured their first piece of silverware by winning the Champions League final against Tottenham.
The following year, Klopp guided the team to their first Premier League title in 30 years, sealing the triumph with 99 points in a season dominated by Liverpool.
