The Dangote Refinery, with a daily capacity of 650,000 barrels, is poised to diversify its crude sources by importing from the United States.
Trafigura Group, a global commodity trader, facilitated the deal, selling 2 million barrels of WTI Midland for end-February delivery, marking a significant shift from the refinery’s usual reliance on Nigerian crude.
This strategic move comes as the refinery, already in production of diesel and aviation fuel, announces the reception of six million barrels of crude oil at its offshore Single Point Moorings (SPMs).
The first cargo, sourced from Agbami crude grade via Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited, set the stage for subsequent deliveries.
Notably, the Dangote Refinery received an additional one million barrels of crude bonny light from the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC Ltd) through Trafigura’s vessel, the MT Otis.
This move is part of the refinery’s plan to process six million barrels of crude from various sources, demonstrating its commitment to diversification and expansion.
Equipped to load 2,900 trucks daily, the refinery emphasizes adherence to Euro V specifications, ensuring high-quality refined petroleum products.
As the largest single-train refinery globally, Dangote’s venture into US crude imports signals a strategic move towards broadening its resource base for enhanced productivity and market competitiveness.
