A disturbing incident highlighting the insecurity plaguing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has exposed several police officers, who have been apprehended for allegedly extorting N29.9 million from an Abuja resident.
The shocking ordeal, narrated by Harrison Gwamnishu, a candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, unfolded in January. Gwamnishu, in a video shared on his X account, claimed that the businessman was forcibly taken by the police, detained, and coerced into transferring all his bank account funds to them.
Not stopping there, the officers demanded the victim to enlist the help of his relatives and friends to send more money before they would release him.
According to Gwamnishu, the victim was whisked away from his work site without any legitimate charges against him, and he was denied the opportunity to provide a formal statement.
Accompanying the video were receipts of the transactions, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Confirming the arrest of some suspects, Force Spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, assured the public that progress was being made towards delivering justice in the case.
“We are making headway on this matter, and justice will be served, as some suspects have been arrested. Hakuna matata,” he stated.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, the Anambra State Police Command has declared Inspector Audu Omadefu wanted over allegations of murder. According to Ikenga Tochukwu, the command’s public relations officer, Omadefu vanished after being accused of murder, identified by his service number AP No. 362178.
The public has been urged to provide any information leading to Omadefu’s whereabouts, with assurances of confidentiality from the police.
