Senate President Godswill Akpabio speculated on Tuesday that the perpetrators behind the killing of soldiers in Delta State might not be Nigerians but possibly mercenaries.

During a debate on the incident, Akpabio expressed doubt that the attackers hailed from the Niger Delta region, proposing the involvement of mercenaries.

“We are not at war. I don’t think they are from the Niger Delta. They may be mercenaries,” he said.

The Senate responded by launching a probe into the killings, directing its Committee on Defence to collaborate with military authorities for more insights into the incident.

In addition to calling for the apprehension of the perpetrators, the Senate urged the Federal Government to provide immediate compensation to the families of the slain soldiers.

While rejecting a motion to offer condolences to civilians killed in the attack, citing uncertainty about the number of casualties, the Senate emphasized the importance of bolstering police recruitment to prevent military involvement in civil matters.
