In a heartbreaking incident, four young girls drowned in a pond in Malkaderi Village, Gagarawa Local Government Area of Jigawa State on Saturday. The tragedy was confirmed by Lawan Adam, the Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, in a statement released Sunday.

According to the police, five teenage girls ventured into the pond to swim around 11 a.m., but the outing took a tragic turn. Four of them—Saina’u Musa, 12; Fiddausi Ado, 11; Habiba Musa, 12; and Bahijja Musa, 13—were found floating lifeless in the water. A fifth girl, eight-year-old Sahura Audu, was rescued after being found struggling.

Following the report of the incident at 3:30 p.m., police officers and local divers were dispatched to the scene. The victims were rushed to Gagarawa Primary Health Centre, where a medical doctor confirmed the deaths of the four girls. Sahura was resuscitated, treated, and later discharged. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families for burial.

The Commissioner of Police, AT Abdullahi, expressed deep condolences to the grieving families and urged parents to closely supervise their children, especially near bodies of water, as the rainy season causes dangerous increases in water levels.
