The Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has officially removed Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, as Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council.

He has been replaced by Igwe Chidubem Iweka, the traditional ruler of Obosi and a renowned author.

Reacting to the development, Igwe Achebe extended his congratulations to Eze Iweka III on his appointment, expressing his support.

“As Mr Governor told me, your appointment was based on extensive consultation, which becomes your mandate to lead the TRC on a solid foundation. As your predecessor, I offer my full support and encouragement to you always in your capacity as chairman.

“I was unavailably absent at today’s meeting due to a clash with a prior commitment in Lagos, of which Mr Governor was aware. I wish you very well,” Achebe said in a statement on Sunday.

Governor Soludo announced the leadership change on Saturday at the International Convention Centre, Awka, during the launch of the “Operation Udo Ga-Chi” security initiative.

He explained that the decision aligns with the newly amended State Traditional Rulers law.

The change follows a history of tension between Soludo and Achebe.

The Obi of Onitsha had criticized the governor’s approach to traditional matters, particularly the suspension of Damian Ezeani, the traditional ruler of Neni, for conferring a chieftaincy title on the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

Achebe had accused the state government of undermining the traditional institution, calling its actions “the apogee of the progressive dehumanisation and dismantling of the traditional institution” under Soludo’s administration.
