A family dispute over an inherited Ube tree has reportedly resulted in the death of a man in Umuakpa, Umudara, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
According to reports, the deceased, identified as Eugene Igbanu, and his brother, Nnamdi Igbanu, had been allocated portions of land by their kinsmen, with an Ube tree serving as the boundary between their properties.
The brothers were reportedly instructed by their kindred to jointly own the tree.
However, trouble allegedly started on November 2, 2026, when Eugene reportedly cut some branches of the tree to make firewood, which he intended to dry and sell.
The situation allegedly escalated when Nnamdi and his wife confronted him, insisting that the proceeds or firewood should be shared because the tree was jointly owned.
The disagreement reportedly developed into a physical altercation, during which Nnamdi and his wife allegedly assaulted Eugene with pieces of firewood.
Eugene was subsequently reported dead following the incident.
Villagers who reportedly arrived at the scene found his lifeless body, while Nnamdi and his wife were said to have fled before their arrival.
Following the incident, some angry villagers reportedly attacked and destroyed Nnamdi’s residence.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no confirmed information regarding the arrest of the alleged suspects or an official statement from the Anambra State Police Command.
The incident has raised concerns about the consequences of unresolved family and inheritance disputes, particularly when disagreements escalate into violence.
