Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voiced sharp criticism of his own Democratic Party amid the fallout from the historic 41-day federal government shutdown, saying “my party crossed a line” by allowing the impasse to continue and causing hardship for millions of Americans. Fetterman, who was among eight Democratic caucus members to break ranks and vote with Republicans to advance a funding bill, said he could no longer support a strategy that left federal workers unpaid, SNAP benefits frozen, and air travel in chaos.

Addressing constituents, Fetterman stated, “After 40 days as a consistent voice against shutting our government down, I voted YES for the 15th time to REOPEN. I’m sorry to our military, SNAP recipients, government workers, and Capitol Police who haven’t been paid in weeks. It should’ve never come to this. This was a failure”.

He also condemned lawmakers on both sides for trying to fundraise off the crisis, insisting he would “not monetize the outrage” while Americans suffered. Fetterman’s rebuke marks a rare public split with his party’s leadership, highlighting mounting frustration with political brinkmanship in Washington.
