The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has attributed the low turnout of voters in the Kano House of Assembly rerun election to the timing of the election which falls in the month of Ramadan fasting. INEC also said the turnout is generally poor because it’s a by-election.

Speaking while observing the exercise, the State Electoral Commissioner, Ambassador Abdu Zango, said that people largely failed to come out because they see the election as a minor one.

“Two things are responsible for the voter apathy, which includes Ramadan and the nature of the election which people see as not a big one, but I believe before closing, many may turn out”.

#Muktv had reported earlier that the rerun election into the State House of Assembly in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano witnessed a low turnout with polling units having very few voters as at 11am.

In Panisau polling unit, five electoral officers arrived about 8am and as at 10.30am only six persons had voted.

Similarly at 003 Kera Panisau Ward with 804 registered voters, only 19 voted as at 11am according to the presiding officer Sani Kabiru. The presiding officer of 019 Ezier said only four persons had voted out of 31 registered .

At Ungogo Kudu with 54 voters, only three voters had voted according to the presiding officer, Aisha Sani Dalha. Also, at Ungogo Kudu1, with 1378 registered voters, 77 persons had at the time of filing this report voted, Basma Ahmad Salihu, presiding officer, said.

Our reporter observed that there is no sign of PDP, NNPP, and the ADC on the INEC ballot papers.

Similarly the Kano Municipal House of Assembly rerun election witnessed yet a similar voter apathy.

In Kankarofi 062, with registered voters totalling 101, only four voted. This is according to the presiding officer Khadijah Adam Sani. This is applicable to the all other polling units.

However, the Electoral Commissioner, Ambassador Abdu Zango hinted that there is no security issues in Kano following the mobilization of security personnel for the exercise.
