A 28-year-old Mrs Charity Anani, who recently gave birth to quadruplets, has died alongside one of her newborns after a prolonged struggle tied to medical complications and an unpaid hospital bill.
Charity, who delivered the four babies at Adebayo Hospital in Igando, reportedly developed severe breathing complications days after her delivery, leading to her death on Friday, April 3, 2026. One of the babies, earlier placed in an incubator, had also died before her passing.
Her husband, Mr Paul, confirmed the devastating development, recounting the painful moments leading to her death.
“It happened on Friday, April 3, 2026. She was complaining that she was not breathing.
Her breathing was not fine, so I needed to call the doctor to check on her. After the doctor examined her, she was given oxygen and medication.
“The breathing complications started on Thursday between 5 pm and 6 pm till around 9 am on Friday, when she eventually passed. We are still in the hospital, Adebayo Hospital at Governor’s Road in Igando, Lagos State, where the incident happened.”
The late Charity had earlier revealed in an interview that she was detained at the hospital after giving birth on February 27, 2026, due to an inability to fully settle a medical bill of N3 million. Although part payment had been made, an outstanding balance of N1.4 million remained.
The family had initially expected twins based on ultrasound results, but were surprised when she delivered quadruplets. Due to complications, two of the babies were delivered via caesarean section, while one required intensive care in an incubator.
In an emotional account, Paul disclosed that he hid the death of one of the babies from his wife before she passed.
“One of the four babies also died, and that was the one in the incubator. At the time the baby died, my wife was still alive, but she was asking about the baby, but because of her condition, I decided not to tell her the truth about what happened.
“I had to keep it to myself, thinking that when we got home, I’d know how to tell her. I didn’t know that this was what would happen at the end of the day. We have been discharged from the hospital,” he stated.
Following the tragedy, the family was discharged from the hospital despite the outstanding bill, as relatives stepped in to take care of the bereaved husband and the surviving babies.
“Actually, I’m not in the hospital again. Although I’ve not been able to balance the hospital bill, as the situation is, they had to discharge us. My family had to take me away from the hospital and put me somewhere because, as I speak, I’m not with my family at the moment.
“I’m currently not getting myself. But the hospital bill had not been claimed even before the incident happened. The three other babies are fine by the grace of God, and they are being taken care of by my family.”
