Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has welcomed former governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, to the All Progressives Congress, describing his return as a major boost to the party in the state.

The governor said Shekarau’s return would further strengthen the ruling party’s structure and political influence in Kano ahead of future elections.

Shekarau on Sunday formally announced his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party.

In a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, the former governor said his exit from the party took immediate effect.

Reacting in a statement issued on Sunday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the governor said a date would soon be announced, in consultation with the national secretariat of the party, for the formal reception of the former governor into the APC.

The governor noted that the party in Kano had continued to witness increasing support and consolidation across various parts of the state.

He said the APC remained the most dominant political force in Kano and was well-positioned for future electoral contests.
