The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced activities for the 2027 general elections, announcing the opening of a 38-day window for political parties to conduct their primaries nationwide.
The electoral body disclosed that political parties now have from April 23 to May 30, 2026, to organize primaries for all elective positions, including presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State Houses of Assembly seats, as well as resolve any internal disputes arising from the process.
INEC further directed that all political parties must submit their membership registers at least 21 days before conducting their primaries. The commission set May 10, 2026, as the final deadline for submission of these registers.
The development marks the formal kickoff of the electoral process, setting the stage for political activities and party alignments ahead of the 2027 polls. INEC emphasized the importance of compliance with the stipulated timelines to ensure a smooth and credible election cycle.
The commission is expected to monitor party primaries closely to ensure adherence to electoral guidelines and promote transparency in candidate selection.
