Meta is planning to lay off around 8,000 employees, representing about 10% of its global workforce, according to a report citing sources briefed on the decision. The job cuts, expected to take place next month, come as the company doubles down on heavy investment in artificial intelligence and seeks to streamline operations.

The report adds that, in addition to the layoffs, Meta will leave thousands of existing vacancies unfilled as part of broader cost-cutting and efficiency measures. Meta’s leadership has framed the move as necessary to fund ambitious AI projects and maintain competitiveness against tech rivals while increasing productivity among remaining staff.

The latest round of cuts would mark Meta’s largest since its major restructuring in 2023, when the company eliminated tens of thousands of roles across multiple waves of layoffs.
