The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South for a single four-year term, setting the stage for a battle among southern political heavyweights ahead of the next general election.

The decision was reached during the party’s National Convention after a motion moved by Afam Victor Ogene, member representing Ogbaru Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly, was overwhelmingly adopted by delegates.

In another major development, the party also resolved that after the completion of the four-year tenure, the presidential ticket would automatically return to the North.

The development is widely seen as a major boost for former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and other southern aspirants expected to contest under the NDC platform in 2027.

The zoning arrangement is already triggering intense political calculations across opposition circles as parties position themselves for a high-stakes showdown against the ruling APC.

More details are expected to emerge from the convention in the coming hours.
