Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has made a startling revelation about his decision to partner with Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, saying sympathy played a major role in his acceptance of the ticket.
Speaking during an interview with Symfoni, Baba-Ahmed disclosed that Obi had earlier approached three influential politicians in 2022 in an attempt to form political alliances ahead of the election, but all of them allegedly turned him down.
The former senator said he was disappointed by the response Obi received and eventually decided to support his presidential ambition.
According to Baba-Ahmed, many Nigerians have misunderstood the nature of his political relationship with Obi, stressing that his decision to become the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate was largely motivated by concern for Obi and Nigeria’s political future.
Despite the revelation, Baba-Ahmed declined to mention the identities of the politicians involved or explain why they refused to align with Obi at the time.
He also made it clear that he is not politically tied to Obi or obligated to follow him into any future political platform, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The former vice-presidential candidate insisted that supporting Obi in 2023 was a personal decision taken in what he believed was the best interest of the country, adding that Obi does not dictate his political decisions or future affiliations.
