The Abia State House of Assembly has resolved to take decisive action against kidnappers and other criminal elements amid growing security concerns across the state.
The resolution followed a motion moved by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Augustine Okezie Mmeregini, who raised alarm over the recent abduction of two residents in the Ohuhu area of Umuahia North Local Government Area.
Mmeregini described the resurgence of kidnapping as a serious threat to public safety and called for urgent measures to protect lives and property across Abia State.
As part of its resolutions, the House agreed to summon security chiefs in the state for an emergency interface aimed at tackling the rising wave of insecurity and strengthening security operations.
The lawmakers also urged the Abia State Homeland Security Agency and other security agencies to intensify efforts in combating crime, while directing the 17 Local Government Area mayors to reactivate and strengthen community vigilante groups.
In addition, traditional rulers and Presidents-General of town unions were encouraged to collaborate closely with security agencies and remain vigilant in safeguarding their communities.
The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that will restore security and ensure the safety of residents across the state.
