The Abia State Police Command has arrested a man captured in a viral video physically assaulting a woman believed to be his wife in the Ogbor Hill area of Aba.
The suspect was apprehended by operatives of the Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU) following public outrage over the disturbing footage, which showed him repeatedly punching the woman and allegedly threatening her life.
In the video, the victim was seen pleading for mercy and seeking help while the suspect continued the assault. Audio from the footage captured the man issuing threats in Igbo, raising concerns among residents and rights advocates.
Acting swiftly on the incident, officers led by the Commander of the VCRU, CSP Emeka Amanchukwu, tracked down and arrested the suspect on Saturday. He is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Reacting to the development, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Aba Central State Constituency in the 2027 election, Anastasia Odochi Uchenna, condemned the attack, describing it as inhumane and unacceptable.
She called for the suspect to be prosecuted in accordance with the law and appealed to the Abia State Government and relevant agencies to ensure the victim receives adequate medical care and support.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said investigations are ongoing and assured the public that the matter would be handled diligently.
The incident has renewed calls for stronger action against domestic violence and greater protection for victims of abuse across the state.
