Residents of Rivers, Bayelsa and Imo states have been thrown into darkness following a major fault on the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s (TCN) Alaoji 132-kilovolt transmission line.

According to TCN, the outage occurred in the early hours of Tuesday after an earth fault and distance protection failure disrupted power transmission on the line.

The development has prevented the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) from receiving bulk electricity for onward distribution to customers in Owerri, Yenagoa and Ahoada, leaving many homes and businesses without power across the three states.

TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, said maintenance engineers have already been deployed to the affected transmission line and are working to restore normal electricity supply as quickly as possible.

The company apologised to affected customers for the disruption and assured residents that efforts are ongoing to resolve the technical fault and restore power to the affected areas.

The blackout has once again highlighted concerns over the vulnerability of critical power infrastructure and its impact on economic and social activities in the affected states.
