
The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly says it is determined in tackling food insecurity and malnutrition through targeted policy actions and increased budgetary support.
The Chairman , House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, Mr Moses Essien made this known when he played host to a delegation of International and Technical experts under the USAID Global Health Supply Chain Programme (Procurement and Supply Management) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) at Uyo.
Mr Essien who is also the member representing Ibiono Ibom State Constituency and Chairman House Committee on Health disclosed that the state government has earmarked N9.6 billion in the 2026 budget for food security and nutrition-related programmes, describing it as a deliberate step toward addressing hunger and improving public health outcomes.
He welcomed the FAO team and commended the organization for selecting Akwa Ibom as one of the beneficiary states for the programme, noting that such partnerships reinforce the importance of establishing Nutrition and Food Security Committees across all State Houses of Assembly in Nigeria.
The Lawmaker further emphasised that the state government has continued to support vulnerable groups through food intervention programmes while calling for stronger measures to prevent the circulation of unsafe and genetically modified food products in rural communities.
Earlier, The delegation which included Dr. Chioma Casandra Ihekoronye, Policy Consultant on Nutrition and Food Security to the Federal House of Representatives in collaboration with FAO, and a Legal Consultant , Sylvia Chinenyenwa Okpo, attached to the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security and deployed to FAO, said they were in the Assembly as part of efforts to deepen nutrition governance, strengthen food security systems, and assess ongoing interventions in the state.
