The Nsokpo Dynamic Association (NDA), in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigerian Navy, has launched an intensified campaign against drug abuse among youths in Imo State, targeting secondary school students with sensitisation and career development programmes.
The initiative, held at Presentation Secondary School, Ogbaku, in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, was organised ahead of the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on June 26.
Speaking during the event themed, “Say Yes to Life, Say No to Drugs — It Kills,” President of the Nsokpo Dynamic Association, Mr. Mark Onyejiaka, described drug abuse as a major threat to the future of young people, urging students to shun substance abuse and remain focused on their aspirations.
Officials of the NDLEA educated students on the dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, while medical personnel from the Nigerian Navy highlighted the severe health consequences of substance misuse, particularly on young minds and bodies.
A career development session led by Dr. Chika Umunnakwe encouraged students to make responsible choices and stay committed to their goals, stressing that involvement in drugs and crime could jeopardise their future.
The programme featured interactive sessions where students engaged experts on issues relating to drug abuse, peer pressure and career growth.
Principal of Presentation Secondary School, Rev. Fr. Joachim Onyeagam, commended the organisers, describing the initiative as timely and impactful.
The NDA reaffirmed its commitment to youth development, announcing plans to extend the anti-drug awareness campaign to more schools across Mbaitoli Local Government Area as part of efforts to promote a drug-free generation in Imo State.
