
The Akwa Ibom State house of Assembly has passed a resolution prohibiting all forms of sign out practice in schools across the state.
The house took the decision following a motion on THE NEED TO PROHIBIT SIGN-OUT CELEBRATIONS IN PRIMARY, SECONDARY AND TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN AKWA IBOM STATE brought during plenary by the member representing Esit Eket/ Ibeno State Constituency,
Mr Udobia Udo .
Mr Udo in the motion emphasized that educational institutions are established to promote learning, discipline, moral values and responsible citizenship among students and pupils but in recent years, sign-out celebrations organized by final-year students after examinations have increasingly degeneraled into activities that are inconsistent with the objectives of education and societal values.
He added that many of these celebrations are characterized by acts of indecent dressing, substance abuse, public drunkenness, sexual misconduct, violence, vandalism of school property, and other forms of anti-social behavior.
In his ruling after the house has considered the prayers in the motion, the Speaker of the house, Elder Udeme Otong mandated the clerk, Mrs Nsikakabasi Orok to communicate the resolution of the house to the appropriate quarters.
Subsequently, Members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has thrown their weight in support of the MOTION ON THE NEED TO REGULATE BRIDE PRICE AND MARRIAGE REQUIREMENTS IN AKWA IBOM STATE.
The motion brought pursuant to Order 111 Rule one of the Standing Orders of the Akwa lbom State House of Assembly. Seventh Edition was sponsored by the member representing ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo State Constituency, Mrs. Selinah Ukpatu.
In the motion, Mrs Ukpatu noted that excessive bride prices and inflated marriage requirements in many communities have imposed significant financial burdens on intending couples.
While praying the house to Urge the Akwa lbom State Traditional Rulers Council to review and
standardize bride prices and marriage requirements across communities in the State, she Called on the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to collaborate with traditional institutions and local government
authorities to promote compliance with approved guidelines.
Speaking in support of the motion, the member representing Uruan state Constituency, Dr Itorobong Etim, member representing Ini state Constituency, Mr Lawrence Udoide and member representing Essien Udim state Constituency, Mr Prince Ukpong Akpabio stressed the need for the motion to see the light of the day.
The house also received motion on the NEED FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A STATE AGRICULTURAL LAND BANK TO PROMOTE FOOD SECURITY, ATTRACT AGRICULTURAL INVESTM ENT AND EMPOWER YOUNG
