The Abia State Government has inaugurated the State Strategy for Integrity, Accountability and Anti-Corruption Steering Committee to strengthen transparency, accountability and good governance across the public service.
Speaking at the inauguration in Umuahia, the Head of Service, Mr. Benson Ojeikere, said the committee reflects the government’s commitment to institutionalising integrity and combating corruption. He charged members to immediately commence the implementation of the state’s anti-corruption framework.
The committee, comprising Permanent Secretaries and other senior government officials, is expected to provide policy direction, monitor implementation and ensure the successful execution of the state’s integrity and accountability strategy.
Also speaking, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, represented by the Solicitor General, Barr. Paul Ogubunka, described integrity as the foundation of sustainable development and urged stakeholders to work collectively in promoting accountability across government institutions.
The State Programme Coordinator of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (ROLAC) Programme, Mr. Peter Jones Omenka, said the committee would serve as the policy driver for the state’s anti-corruption agenda. He noted that the European Union-supported programme would strengthen collaboration among government agencies, civil society organisations, the media and the private sector to achieve measurable results in the fight against corruption.
