The Anambra State Government has announced a statewide environmental sanitation and desilting exercise aimed at tackling flooding, illegal waste disposal and environmental degradation across the state.
The exercise is scheduled to commence on Saturday, July 4, 2026, with the government warning that owners of structures obstructing waterways and individuals dumping refuse into drainage channels will face enforcement actions.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, who said the initiative forms part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to promoting a cleaner, healthier and flood-free environment.
To ensure the success of the exercise, movement will be restricted across the state from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on the day of the sanitation exercise.
The government, however, said essential service providers, including security agencies, healthcare workers, ambulance services, journalists, the fire service and other authorised personnel, will be exempted from the restriction.
As part of efforts to strengthen flood control measures, the government also directed developers of new buildings to make adequate provisions for catch pits to facilitate proper runoff water management in line with existing environmental regulations.
The Commissioner urged residents to support the exercise by keeping their surroundings clean and ensuring drainage channels remain free of refuse, warning that anyone found violating the state’s environmental laws would be prosecuted.
The state government reaffirmed its resolve to sustain environmental protection measures as part of broader efforts to improve public health, prevent flooding and enhance the quality of life for residents across Anambra State.
