A 22-year-old teacher at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka-Igah, in Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State, Maryam Usman, has reportedly died after she was allegedly assaulted by the father of one of her pupils following disciplinary action taken against the child.

According to reports, the incident began on June 17, 2026, after the teacher disciplined a pupil for alleged misconduct in school. During the process, the child reportedly fell and sustained an arm injury.

The pupil’s father, identified as Ishaq Abdullahi, allegedly confronted the teacher at her residence alongside two other individuals and assaulted her. She was reportedly attacked again later the same day while on her way to a mosque.

Family members further alleged that Maryam was assaulted again on June 18 by additional persons, leaving her with severe injuries. She was initially treated at a clinic before being referred to a hospital in Okpo, where she later died on June 25.

A relative of the deceased called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, insisting that those responsible for the alleged assaults should be brought to justice.

A community source disclosed that both families had previously held meetings in an attempt to resolve the dispute, adding that following Maryam’s death, some members of her family allegedly vandalised the residence of the pupil’s father.

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the incident.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said preliminary investigations indicate that Abdullahi Ishaq, accompanied by two women, allegedly assaulted the teacher at the school on June 18 over the disciplinary action taken against the pupil.

According to the police, the victim sustained serious injuries, received treatment at a hospital in Ugbamaka and was later referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, where she eventually died.

The Command said officers visited the scene and the deceased’s residence as part of the investigation, while arrangements are being made to conduct an autopsy at the General Hospital, Ankpa.

Police added that the suspects fled before officers arrived at the scene and that efforts are underway to apprehend them. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department upon their arrest for further investigation.
