A joint security operation in Nnewi, Anambra State, has uncovered an alleged syndicate involved in child trafficking, child labour and the processing of chemically preserved animal skin suspected to be sold as kpomo for human consumption.

The operation, carried out on June 29, 2026, at Ndimgbu Otolo and Amiliba Otolo in Nnewi North Local Government Area, was led by the leadership of the Otolo Nnewi Development Union following intelligence reports on the group’s alleged activities.

According to the operatives, the syndicate was allegedly coordinated by Chief Ezekiel Anyigor and an accomplice identified as Mr. Simon, both said to be from Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The two suspects are currently at large.

During the raid, security operatives reportedly discovered large quantities of animal skin alleged to have been preserved with harmful chemicals and prepared for sale as kpomo. Authorities also suspect that the products may not be derived from cattle, although investigations are ongoing to determine the exact source of the animal skins.

Several persons, including adults, nursing mothers and minors, were taken into custody during the operation.

Preliminary findings indicate that some of the rescued children alleged they were brought from Ebonyi State and compelled to hawk the processed animal skin in parts of Anambra State, including the Nnewi and Igbo-Ukwu areas.

The operation also uncovered allegations of child trafficking and exploitation. Investigators are examining claims that some underage girls were impregnated and their babies taken to unknown destinations. Authorities emphasized that these allegations remain under investigation and have not yet been established in court.

Following the operation, the President-General of the Otolo Nnewi Development Union, Hon. Anazodo, ordered the immediate closure of the affected premises pending the outcome of security investigations.

The development has raised fresh concerns over food safety and child protection in the state, with residents urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to relevant authorities.

Health experts have repeatedly warned that consuming food products processed with harmful chemicals can pose serious health risks, including damage to the liver, kidneys and other vital organs.

Meanwhile, security agencies say investigations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and unravel the full extent of the alleged criminal network.
