A Magistrate Court sitting in Umuahia, Abia State, has granted bail to 37-year-old Agwu Ukpo, who is standing trial over his alleged involvement in a viral assault incident that sparked widespread public outrage.

Ukpo was arraigned on charges of attempted murder, indecent assault and assault. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges brought against him.

The matter was heard in chambers, after which the court granted the defendant bail under specific conditions.

According to the state counsel, one of the bail conditions requires the defendant to produce either the traditional ruler or the President-General of his community as a surety.

The court subsequently adjourned the case to August 19, 2026, for further hearing.

The defendant was earlier arrested by the Abia State Police Command after a video of the alleged assault circulated widely on social media, drawing public condemnation and calls for justice.

The case is expected to continue as the prosecution presents evidence before the court.

The defendant remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
