
The Delta State Government has approved the procurement of 50 eco-friendly Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and hybrid electric vehicles as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs and ease the burden on residents who depend on public transport.
The State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Onoriode Agofure, made this known in Asaba while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Agofure stated further, “The governor is aware that transportation is central to economic developmen as eighty percent of people that move around dailydepend on public transportation to go to the market, schools, offices and other places,
“The newly approved 50 CNG buses will form the backbone of the state’s MORE Mass Transit Scheme, aimed at providing safe, affordable and efficient transportation for residents.”
Mr Agofure also announced that the council approved the construction of an ultra-mega bus terminal in Asaba to eliminate the proliferation of illegal and makeshift motor parks across the state capital and provide a more organized and efficient transport system.
He described the approvals as landmark achievements in the state’s transport sector and commended Governor Oborevwori for introducing practical measures to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal on residents.
Also briefing journalists, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, revealed that Governor Oborevwori presented a memo seeking approval for the statutory backing of a thirteenth month salary for Delta State civil servants, explaining that the approval would pave the way for an executive bill to be transmitted to the Delta State House of Assembly.
Mr Aniagwu further disclosed that the Executive Council approved the recruitment of additional teachers, particularly in science and technical subjects, to address manpower shortages in public secondary schools, adding that the Ministry of Secondary Education has been directed to submit a comprehensive memo indicating the number of teachers required for employment.
” The exco also approved the equipping of the technical school at Oghareki in Ethiope West local government area, and of course to also equip as soon as it is completed the technical school in Irri. That tells you the effortd of the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in ensuring that quality education is provided”, Aniagwu stated.
