The Enugu State Ministry of Transport has suspended all traffic task force operations on federal highways across the Enugu metropolis with immediate effect to curb the activities of fake enforcement officials accused of harassing and extorting motorists.
In a statement issued by the Commander of the Enugu State Traffic Management Authority, Mr. Kenneth Aniebonam Ugwu, the ministry said the decision followed reports of impostors posing as Ministry of Transport officials to illegally extort road users.
The ministry disclosed that a special enforcement team has been set up to identify and arrest those involved, adding that several suspected fake operatives have already been apprehended and are undergoing interrogation ahead of prosecution.
Motorists were urged to report any incident involving suspected fake traffic officials to the Office of the ESTMA Commander for prompt action, while the ministry warned that anyone found engaging in illegal traffic enforcement or extortion would face the full weight of the law.
