More than 500 athletes, coaches, sports administrators, students and fitness enthusiasts participated in the 2026 Olympic Day Celebration in Awka, as the Anambra State Government reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots sports development, youth empowerment and healthy living.

The event, led by the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Patrick Agha Mba, featured a solidarity walk from the ABS Gate to the Awka Township Stadium, where participants engaged in fitness and recreational activities.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Agha Mba described sports as a vital tool for promoting unity, discipline, physical fitness and sustainable development.

He conveyed the goodwill message of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, assuring residents of the administration’s continued investment in sports infrastructure, youth development and community empowerment.

The Commissioner disclosed that the state government has completed the Ekwulobia Township Stadium, equipped with modern sporting facilities and a country club, describing the project as a major boost to talent discovery, sports tourism and recreational activities in the state.

He also commended the governor’s ongoing infrastructure development across Anambra, noting that the projects are creating opportunities for economic growth and greater youth participation in sports.

Hon. Agha Mba announced that the Olympic Day Walk would become an annual event in the state to encourage healthy living, deepen grassroots sports development and promote the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, respect and unity.

Participants lauded the successful organisation of the event and expressed optimism that the state’s renewed focus on sports would nurture young talents and strengthen Anambra’s position as a leading sporting destination in Nigeria.

The Olympic Day celebration is observed annually worldwide to commemorate the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and promote active lifestyles through the core values of movement, learning and discovery.
