Chairman of Fidelity Bank Plc, Mrs. Amaka Onwughalu, has been named the Woman of the Year at the 5th edition of the Anambra Man of the Year (AMTY) Awards in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s banking industry, corporate governance and leadership.
Announcing the honour, Chairman of the AMTY Planning Committee, Sr. Prof. Adaoma Igwedibia, said the award celebrates Onwughalu’s distinguished career spanning more than three decades and her exceptional impact on Nigeria’s financial services sector.
According to the committee, Onwughalu’s professional journey has been marked by excellence, integrity, resilience and strategic leadership, making her one of the few Nigerian bankers to rise through virtually every level of the profession before becoming Chairman of a commercial bank.
She was also recognised as the first woman to chair the Board of Fidelity Bank Plc, where she has continued to provide strategic direction that has strengthened the institution’s corporate governance and long-term growth.
The committee further highlighted her pioneering achievements, including becoming the first female Managing Director of a commercial bank from Anambra State when she led Mainstreet Bank in 2014.
Before assuming her current role, Onwughalu held several senior executive positions in the banking industry, including Deputy Managing Director of Skye Bank Plc and Acting Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Reliance Bank Limited.
She currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Blueshield Financial Services Limited, where she continues to provide leadership in Nigeria’s financial sector.
Academically, Mrs. Onwughalu holds degrees in Economics, Business Administration and Corporate Governance and has attended executive leadership programmes at globally renowned institutions, including Harvard, Stanford, Cambridge, INSEAD and IMD.
The AMTY Planning Committee also commended her commitment to mentoring young professionals, promoting ethical leadership and contributing to institutional development within Nigeria’s financial sector.
The award, according to the organisers, honours her enduring legacy of excellence and recognises her as a role model whose achievements continue to inspire future generations of business leaders across Nigeria.
