Four outstanding Nigerian students have been selected to represent the country at the maiden edition of the 2026 World Spelling Bee Cup scheduled to hold from July 10 to 20 in Shanghai, China.
Team Nigeria comprises the 2026 African Spelling Bee Junior Champion, Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti; Abdurrahman Yusuf and Maryam Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin; and Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba.
The Nigeria Spelling Bee described the participation as a historic milestone, highlighting the team’s remarkable performance at the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe, where Oluwadamilola Adeolu emerged Junior Champion after defeating contestants from more than 30 countries, while Abdurrahman Yusuf secured third place. Nigeria also finished as the second-best overall team at the continental competition.
Expressing her excitement, 14-year-old Oluwadamilola Adeolu said she looks forward to competing with the world’s best spellers, improving her vocabulary and making Nigeria proud by bringing home the championship trophy.
She appreciated the Nigeria Spelling Bee organisers, the Ekiti State Government, her parents and coaches for their unwavering support and encouragement.
