Ahead of the 2027 general elections, stakeholders advocating for political equity in Imo East Senatorial District have called on the people of the Mbaise sub-zone to rally behind Sir Basil Maduka’s senatorial aspiration.
The advocates argued that the Ahiazu/Ezinihitte Federal Constituency remains the only federal constituency in the Owerri Senatorial Zone yet to produce a senator since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.
According to them, the 2027 election presents an opportunity to promote equity, fair representation and inclusive governance within the zone.
The group maintained that while the principle of zoning may not be constitutionally binding, it has remained an important political mechanism for fostering balance, inclusion and stability across communities.
They urged voters to view the senatorial contest beyond party affiliations, describing it as an opportunity for Mbaise to strengthen its representation at the National Assembly.
The proponents also encouraged the people not to rely solely on future political expectations but to seize what they described as an immediate opportunity to secure greater political relevance through the Senate.
Highlighting Sir Basil Maduka’s credentials, the supporters described him as a businessman and philanthropist with interests in the oil and gas sector, citing his involvement in youth empowerment, scholarship programmes, healthcare interventions, support for women and community development initiatives across Imo State.
They said Maduka has consistently identified youth employment, entrepreneurship, economic empowerment and accessible representation as key priorities of his campaign.
The group expressed confidence that his experience in business and grassroots engagement would position him to effectively represent the interests of the Owerri Senatorial District if elected.
They, however, urged eligible voters to assess all candidates based on their competence, track records and vision for development before making their choice at the polls.
The appeal comes as political consultations and alignments continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections in Imo State.
