Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu to immediately suspend the Minister of Works, David Umahi, over the controversial death of 26-year-old nurse, Mary Habila, at the minister’s country home in Uburu, Ebonyi State.
In a statement issued through his media office, Atiku said placing Umahi on suspension would pave the way for a transparent, independent and credible investigation into the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death.
According to him, allowing the minister to remain in office while investigations are ongoing could weaken public confidence in the process and raise concerns about the credibility of the outcome.
Atiku, however, stressed that his demand should not be interpreted as a declaration of guilt, insisting that it is aimed solely at protecting the integrity of the investigation and demonstrating the government’s commitment to accountability and the rule of law.
The controversy surrounding the case has continued to generate nationwide attention, particularly after the Ebonyi State Police Command announced plans to conduct an autopsy, only for the deceased nurse’s family to later file an affidavit opposing the post-mortem examination and requesting that her body be released for burial.
