The Enugu State Executive Council has approved the construction of 19,000 housing units as part of the state government’s efforts to address the housing deficit, expand access to affordable homes and improve living standards.
The approval was announced by the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Ben Okoh, after the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Enugu.
According to the commissioner, the housing projects include 1,000 luxury housing units within the New Enugu City development and 18,000 mass housing units at the proposed Gateway Estate.
He explained that the New Enugu City project will feature four-bedroom and five-bedroom homes, while the Gateway Estate is designed to provide affordable housing supported by essential infrastructure such as roads, electricity and water supply.
Mr. Okoh noted that the approval for the New Enugu City housing project follows the completion of the first phase of the 6.5-kilometre dual carriageway and ongoing internal road construction within the new city.
The Executive Council also approved the construction of the 10.5-kilometre Igogoro–Amachara–Ikpamodo–Okpo-Amaada Road, flood control projects in flash flood-prone areas of Nsukka, and the procurement of more than 30 light-duty equipment to strengthen road maintenance and emergency response operations.
Also approved were the completion and rehabilitation of the Enugu State Secretariat Complex and key tourism projects, including the Ovu Lake Golf Resort, Akwuke and Attakwu tourism developments, as well as the 5.32-kilometre Okpatu–Awhum Cable Car Project.
The approvals form part of the Enugu State Government’s broader strategy to improve infrastructure, boost tourism, stimulate economic growth and provide quality housing for residents.
