The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has come under scrutiny following allegations that officials at its Onitsha South Local Government Area office in Anambra State demanded ₦2,000 from applicants before releasing their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
The allegation emerged in a viral video circulating on social media, in which a resident claimed that some officials requested payment before processing and issuing PVCs.
According to the resident, an official identified as Mrs. Otito allegedly demanded the money from applicants. He further claimed that a disagreement ensued after one of the applicants insisted that PVC collection is free of charge and attempted to record the incident.
The resident also alleged that during the altercation, the official physically assaulted those involved and reportedly bit a young woman who attempted to intervene.
The viral video captured a heated exchange, with voices heard in the Igbo language during the confrontation.
INEC has consistently maintained that voter registration, PVC collection, transfer of voter information, correction of personal details, and replacement of lost or damaged voter cards are provided free of charge. The electoral body has also urged members of the public to report any form of extortion by its officials or ad hoc staff.
As of the time of filing this report, INEC had not issued an official statement responding to the allegations from its Onitsha South office.
