Financial technology giant, OPay, has pulled back the curtain on the complex engineering infrastructure driving its payment ecosystem, revealing a technical shift that has elevated transaction success rates to 99.9 per cent while slashing processing times to under one second.
Speaking at a recent media engagement in Lagos, company executives outlined an ambitious long-term roadmap to reach one billion users globally, expand support to 10 million merchants, and drive broad social impact through its expanded N1.2bn youth scholarship initiative.
Opening the session, the Chief Commercial Officer at OPay, Elizabeth Wang, emphasised that the company’s vision reaches far beyond maintaining a mobile app.
“People may only see a successful transfer or payment notification, but behind that moment are years of investment in technology, infrastructure, and innovation. Our goal is to make digital finance so dependable that customers can move money confidently without ever needing to think about the technology making it possible,” Wang said.
She added that financial inclusion cannot survive without absolute user confidence, noting, “When people trust digital financial services, they use them more confidently. That trust becomes the true foundation for long-term economic growth.”
Detailing the architecture beneath the surface, the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, Dotun Adekunle, explained how OPay systematically eliminated payment bottlenecks using direct switching links, multi-layer infrastructure redundancies, and automatic failovers.
“We don’t begin with technology; we begin with the customer’s experience. Every failed transfer, delayed alert, or security concern is treated as an engineering challenge. Where others accept these problems as normal, our teams work until the problem disappears,” Adekunle stated.
