U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly pushing for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations following the success of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to the New York Post, Trump believes Infantino possesses the leadership qualities needed to head the United Nations, describing the FIFA president as a respected global figure with a unique ability to unite people from different nations through sport.
The report adds that Trump has privately shared the idea with close allies following the conclusion of the World Cup, which he hailed as a major success. Infantino and Trump have developed a close working relationship in recent years, particularly during preparations for the 2026 tournament hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
However, any bid for the UN’s top position would require nomination through the United Nations selection process, including approval by the Security Council and confirmation by the General Assembly. There is currently no indication that Infantino has expressed interest in seeking the role.
