The debate over the South-East’s quest for Nigeria’s presidency has intensified as the South-East Leader of the Tinubu Support Organisation (TSO), Dr. George Agbakahi, rejected reports of an alleged agreement limiting a Peter Obi presidency to a single four-year term.
In a statement titled “The Igbo Presidency and the Politics of Half-Measures,” Agbakahi argued that the South-East deserves the opportunity to produce a president who can serve a full constitutional tenure rather than a single term.
He maintained that, after decades of limited access to Nigeria’s highest political office, the region should not accept any arrangement that would shorten its opportunity for national leadership.
Agbakahi also raised constitutional concerns over the reported agreement, noting that the 1999 Constitution permits an elected president to seek a second term and that private political agreements cannot override constitutional provisions.
The APC chieftain further urged South-East leaders and stakeholders to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing that the current administration has initiated key infrastructure, economic and development projects that would benefit the region.
According to him, the South-East should adopt a long-term political strategy that would strengthen its position ahead of future presidential contests instead of accepting what he described as a “half-presidency.”
The remarks come amid ongoing political discussions over the South-East’s aspiration to produce Nigeria’s president in the 2027 general election.
