The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has intensified its financial literacy campaign among young Nigerians, with a renewed focus on equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed financial decisions.
The initiative was highlighted during the 2026 Global Money Week programme organised by the NDIC for staff and students of Urban Model Secondary School, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
Speaking at the event, the Principal Manager of Communications and Public Affairs, Mr. Toke Afolayan, said the campaign was aimed at improving financial awareness, encouraging savings, protecting bank deposits and promoting responsible money management among young people.
He explained that the programme, themed “Small Money Talks,” also provided an opportunity to educate students on the core mandates of the NDIC, including protecting depositors, promoting stability in the banking sector and strengthening confidence in Nigeria’s financial system.
Afolayan urged the students to embrace financial discipline by developing smart spending habits, prioritising their needs, saving regularly and avoiding unnecessary debts.
Also speaking, Senior Manager at the NDIC, Mr. Shehu Umar-Mohammed, assured participants that the corporation provides insurance cover for deposits in licensed banks and other financial institutions, while working with the Central Bank of Nigeria to maintain stability within the banking sector.
He noted that the NDIC’s intervention has continued to strengthen public confidence in the safety of bank deposits across the country.
The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Donatus Ilang, represented by Mr. Igwe Nwuruku, alongside the Principal of Urban Model Secondary School, Mr. Paul Odigbo, commended the NDIC for extending the financial literacy campaign to students in the state, describing the initiative as timely and beneficial to the younger generation.
