Aviation experts have commended the investments by the Enugu and Akwa Ibom State governments in their state-owned airlines, describing the initiatives as strategic steps that will expand Nigeria’s air travel market, improve regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth.

The experts noted that the establishment of Enugu Air and Ibom Air has injected significant investment into the aviation sector, created employment opportunities for pilots, engineers, cabin crew and other aviation professionals, while opening up previously underserved air routes across the country.

They observed that both states are not only operating airlines but are also developing airport hubs, with Akwa Ibom upgrading the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, and Enugu strengthening operations at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport through Enugu Air.

Travel and tourism expert, Ambassador Ikechi Uko, said state-owned airlines have the capacity to develop new routes that private operators often avoid due to profitability concerns.

According to him, expanding services to underserved destinations will improve access, boost commerce and encourage balanced economic development across Nigeria.

Former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, also praised the Enugu State Government’s aviation strategy, describing Enugu Air as a practical example of how government investment can unlock new economic opportunities and increase passenger traffic.

He noted that growing flight operations at the Enugu airport indicate rising business activities and greater confidence in the state’s aviation sector.

Similarly, Executive Director of Ibom Air, George Uriesi, reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to positioning Uyo as a regional aviation hub, with plans to strengthen connectivity across West and Central Africa.

Industry stakeholders also highlighted Enugu Air’s participation in the ongoing Farnborough International Air Show in the United Kingdom as a major step towards attracting international partnerships, investments and enhancing the state’s global aviation profile.

The experts expressed optimism that sustained investment in aviation infrastructure and route development by both states would drive tourism, trade, job creation and long-term economic growth while strengthening Nigeria’s domestic aviation industry.
