A majority of member states of the International Criminal Court (ICC) have voted to dismiss Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan following allegations of sexual misconduct, marking a significant leadership change for the global war crimes tribunal.
According to Reuters, 82 of the ICC’s 125 member states voted in favour of removing Khan during a special session. The decision follows an investigation by the court’s oversight body into allegations of sexual misconduct involving a junior staff member.
Khan has consistently denied the allegations, with his legal team describing the dismissal process as unlawful and unsupported by the evidence. The ICC is now expected to begin the process of selecting a new chief prosecutor, while existing cases and arrest warrants remain unaffected.
