The newly recognised Traditional Leader of the Igbo Community in Japan, Onyendu Chris Brown Umeh, has called on Igbos living abroad to be worthy ambassadors of their homeland by living peacefully in their host countries while contributing to the development of Igboland.
Umeh, popularly known as Ala Na’zu Nwa, made the call after he was formally conferred with the title of Onyendu Ndigbo of Japan by the South East Council of Traditional Rulers at a ceremony held at the palace of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers in Owerri.
The honour followed the recommendation of the Committee on the Regularisation of Igbo Diaspora Traditional Title and Leadership, established to regulate and recognise the leadership of Igbo communities in the diaspora.
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Umeh, an indigene of Ezinifitte in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, described the honour as a recognition of his efforts to unite the Igbo community in Japan and promote the development of the South-East.
He pledged to uphold the confidence reposed in him and continue working to strengthen unity among Igbos living abroad.
Umeh urged members of the Igbo diaspora to remain connected to their roots by investing in and contributing to the development of their communities back home.
He also encouraged Igbos worldwide to foster peaceful relationships in their host countries while projecting a positive image of the Igbo nation.
Commenting on reports of xenophobic attacks against foreigners in South Africa, Umeh stressed the importance of maintaining strong ties with one’s homeland, noting that a secure and developed home remains essential for citizens living abroad.
He commended the South East Council of Traditional Rulers and the Committee on the Regularisation of Igbo Diaspora Traditional Title and Leadership for promoting credible leadership among Igbo communities in the diaspora.
Umeh further called on Nigerians in the diaspora to work closely with traditional rulers in advancing peace, tackling insecurity, reducing poverty and supporting sustainable development across the South-East.
